And you will live on in my love for Galaxy Quest by way of my love for Star Trek.īy Grabthar’s hammer, by the suns of Worvan, you shall be remembered. Thank you for your flawless, heartfelt, and hilarious performance. Kirk: “I see you’ve managed to get your shirt off.” A perfect retort that never fails to make me burst into a fit a giggles. Check out the two amIright misheard lyrics books including one book devoted to misheard lyrics of the 1980s. By far and away, my favorite line uttered by Rickman is a superb hat tip to Captain James T. Parody song lyrics for the song Mo Money, Mo Problems by Notorious B.I.G. The delivery of his lines in the film are obviously very calculated for peak humor but feel so natural. This is even more poignant when you consider both actors passed away in the last year. His character, Alex Dane, was written as a frustrated actor struggling with being typecast as a salute to Leonard Nimoy, who had the same problem after his portrayal of Spock. But by the end, it’s the fans who save the day with their knowledge and attention to detail.īut let’s talk about Rickman’s performance, as he is the crowning jewel of the film. This trend is continued throughout the beginning of Galaxy Quest, lovingly poking fun at us. Science fiction fans, in general, are often portrayed in media as losers who are out of touch with reality crazed individuals who fixate on minor technological details of the stories. The nods to Star Trek via the inclusion of tropes, like the villain of the week and the landing party, and even more subtle salutes, like paying homage to the Enterprise itself with the Protector by giving it the registry prefix of NTE (which stands for “Not The Enterprise”), are what give the movie its incredible substance. The concept of telling the story of a group of actors from a once-successful science fiction television show within a film was a stroke of genius. Even for people who have never seen an episode of Star Trek, Galaxy Quest is still an immensely entertaining movie because it is accessible to the masses.

Very few Trek fans will disagree if you include it in a list of the existing twelve, soon to be thirteen, actual Star Trek films. And it parodies the beloved franchise respectfully. It is arguably one of the best parody films in the history of movie making. I always forget just how perfect Galaxy Quest is as a love letter to Star Trek until I’m in the midst of a viewing. It was my way of mourning Rickman, but it was also a reminder of how fantastic Galaxy Quest really is. For me, the die-hard (pun definitely intended) Trekkie, it was obviously Galaxy Quest. With the sudden passing of veteran actor Alan Rickman late last week, many people were inspired to watch their favorite performance of his over the weekend.
